Jaltepec—A Season Of Growth

Centro Educativo Jaltepec, a unique technical university for women specializing in hospitality and hotel management, has entered 2025 with a spirit of transformation and gratitude. Over the past months, a series of meaningful events and institutional milestones have strengthened our mission to empower young women from across Mexico through professional education.

On February 5th, Jaltepec opened its doors for a heartwarming Open House event, welcoming sponsors and friends from the international community. Guests were greeted with beverages and hors d’oeuvres prepared by students and enjoyed the stunning view from the terrace. The event carried special significance as we honored Linda Buckthorpe and Carole Baker, two devoted women who have supported Jaltepec for over 25 years. Linda will retire officially on June 1st, and Carole will also step back after years of selfless dedication.

A formal presentation by Montse González, our Institutional Development Administrator, and Erika Torres, member of our Superior Council, highlighted Jaltepec’s mission. Guests then toured our renovated facilities, including classrooms, the professional kitchen, and student residences. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, all 18 students seeking financial aid this year were awarded full scholarships. The event concluded with a student-prepared lunch and an introduction to our Sponsorship Program by our new Community Facilitator, Chiemi Ma.

On January 21st, La Bodega restaurant in Ajijic hosted a Comedy Benefit. This lively evening, filled with laughter and camaraderie, featured a tequila tasting, a comedy show, and a lovely dinner. All proceeds supported Jaltepec’s students, including bottle sales of Reserva de los González tequila. We thank La Bodega and T.D. Lake for making this event possible.

Speaking of tequila, Jaltepec’s cherished Tequila Reserva de los González tour returned this spring on April 10th. These exclusive tours to a private distillery in Atotonilco El Alto offer guests an immersive experience into tequila production, agave history, and gourmet hospitality. With luxury transport, tastings, and meals, these tours are not only a cultural highlight but a key fundraising initiative. Private tours are available for groups of 10 or more. For information, contact Chiemi Ma at chiemi.ma@gmail.com or +1 (253) 335-8050.

This academic year also marks the start of a Dual Education Model at Jaltepec. Beginning in September 2024, senior students pursuing a Technical University Degree in Hospitality will combine academic coursework with professional experience at partnering companies. This innovative program is aligned with Jalisco’s Higher Education Law and equips students with both theoretical knowledge and real-world skills, ensuring they graduate as highly competitive professionals.

Every newsletter we publish includes a story that demonstrates the impact of our mission. This quarter, we celebrate the success of Rosa María Andrade de Hernández, also known as Rosy M., from the 2011-2013 generation. Now living in California, Rosy is a wife, mother of three, and Health Services Technician at an elementary school in the Coachella Valley School District. She provides first aid, manages school registration, and supports families daily.

Rosy attributes her resilience and values to her time at Jaltepec. Guided by the phrase “To serve is to live,” she reminds current students: “Every effort is worth it. The education you are receiving will open doors. Jaltepec will always be part of you.”

Lastly, we are proud to share that Centro Educativo Jaltepec has been added to the Foundation for Lake Chapala Charities (FLCC), a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) public charity. This partnership allows our U.S. donors to make tax-deductible contributions, further expanding our support network. Visit https://lakechapalacharities.org to donate and select Jaltepec from the list of charities.

At Jaltepec, we believe in the far-reaching impact of empowering women through education. Thanks to our generous supporters, we continue to transform lives.
