31ST ANNUAL MEXICAN NATIONAL CHILI COOKOFF… is ready to roll!
This 3-day event begins with “The People’s Choice” Salsa Competition on Friday, March 6, Home Cooks Chili Competition on Saturday, March 7, and Chefs Chili Competition on Sunday, March 8, 2009—and all to be tasted and judged by you, the attendees!
Entrants in Friday’s Salsa Competition include Dan Russell of Ajijic – “Terlingua Especial”; Tom & Patti Gates of Ajijic – “Jose’s Salsa”; Omar Vega & Santos Varela of San Juan Cosala – “Ruben’s Ostrich Salsa”; Chuck Balnis & Linda Bothe of Riberas del Pilar – “Cha Cha Chutney”; Alex Acevedo of Ajijic – “Pepito’s Salsa”; John & Shirley Danilkiewicz of Chapala – “Bar Tomas Salsa”; Consuelo Polanco, Eduardo Chavez & Ricardo Serratos of Ajijic – “Chiludo”; Gloria Beltran of San Antonio – “Salsa Gloria”; and Christian Militello Galindo of Ajijic – “Filio Salsa”.
March 6, 7 and 8—come and enjoy three days of entertainment, music, food, margaritas, charros, and fun in Ajijic at the grounds of Tobolandia from 11:30 am to 5 pm. The Cookoff Parade begins at Lloyd-Actinver’s at 12:30 pm on Saturday, March 7. From Smart Cars to the Shriners, colorful charro groups to convertibles with Eastern Star and Red Hatters, all will be saluting this year’s Cookoff.
Entertainment on the “Big Stage” begins as the parade enters the Cookoff grounds. Groups appearing include the Doo Wops, South American Music by Xig’Nal and Vocalist Lupita Jimenez. Sunday’s entertainment features the crowd-pleasing Dancing Horses, Noe’s ever-popular music and Harpist Javier Raygoza.
Last year’s designated Lakeside charities all received checks for $2,500 pesos to benefit their deserving programs. This year’s benefiting organizations include Casa de Ancianos, Ajijic’s Centro de Desarrollo, Niños Incapacitados, the Chapala Red Cross, Niños de San Antonio & Escuela Primaria, and the Lakeside School for the Deaf.
Join the drawings hourly for super raffle prizes—dinners at a myriad of local restaurants, spa time and fitness club memberships, golf rounds, local craft items and more—look for the official roving ticket sellers and buy that lucky winning ticket!
Over 80 vendors are ready to tempt everyone with selections of jewelry, clothing of all varieties, food items to fill you more than once, hats of all shapes and sizes, decorative and craft items from near and far—as well as your feathered and not-so-feathered friends from the Wildlife Shelter.
Come Sunday to sample and vote for the prize-winning chili in the Professional Chef’s Chili Competition. Lakeside restaurants represented: La Propela/El Barco, Ruben’s Grill, Manix, Pepito’s, St. Peter’s, Tomas Bar & Restaurant, Beer Garden, Il Filio de Giovanni, Café Adelita and La Tasca.
The 2009 Chili Cookoff volunteer board, headed by Loren Reynolds, includes Ann Whiting, Tom Johnson, Aurora Michel, Jorge Valencia, Joan Frost, Jim Hussin, Don Howse, Frances Evans, Charlie Smith, Sue Smith, Kenee Campo and John Brown.
