Slow Your Roll

Let us all stop and take a deep breath. The entire world is going through monumental changes. And we all must stop. Take in a long breath and take a deep breath. The events in the world have gotten more hectic since January as the man who now occupies the position of the “Leader of the Free World” but also his unelected unsanctioned brethren, have unleashed a flurry of activities that have area expats here at Lakeside reeling. No corner of the world seems to have been left unaffected.

Canadians, citizens of the USA, Mexico and Panama, Greenland, Denmark, Gaza, Israel, Saudia Arabia, the United Kingdom and Africa have all been touched by the actions or by comments coming from the United States in the past few weeks.

I speak here and now only to the expat community of Jalisco. We are guests in this beautiful country of Mexico. We are here at the grace of the Mexican government and her people. Wherever you go, whatever you do, it would be good to remind yourselves that you are the ambassadors of your home country here in Mexico whether you like it or not.

Recently, there have been several incidents that have been noted within the online social media and at public venues in the area.

The most egregious episode happened at a February 6 concert at LCS. It started by provocation and ended in fisticuffs. Horrified onlookers and members of the LCS board looked on in disbelief. This is NOT acceptable in any way.

We, each and every individual living here, are entitled to our own opinion. We are NOT, however entitled to “troll” or incite the anger of others with opposite opinions. The politics of the world stage are highly volatile right now. And as humans our most important priority is to promote the peace and harmony of our villages. There is no room here for violence. There is no room for people of one faction to tell the people of another to “go home.” No one has the right to disrupt a group of like-minded people who gather simply to enjoy an event. If you don’t share their viewpoint, your option is simple. Go do something else. Let it be.

Civility is the maxim to strive for here. Raised in the social graces primarily by my beloved grandmother, her words guide me, and I hope will guide you. First of all, while in public always be your best self. Do not engage in discussions about politics or religion. Respect other people’s point of view, but do not respond negatively. If you are not comfortable, change the subject or move along.

If you want to present an event where people can openly exchange their viewpoints, do so, but with the thought that we can debate with passion, but without name calling and violence.

I simply ask that you leave your negative feelings and ill will aside. Enjoy the beauty of the day, the people of Mexico and our expat friends and neighbors. We need each other now more than ever.
