JALTEPEC: Honoring the past—celebrating the future

Centro Educativo Jaltepec, a unique technical university for young women specializing in hospitality and hotel management, continues to shine as a space where young women from underserved backgrounds are empowered through professional education rooted in values, service, and excellence.

This past spring was marked by a series of powerful events that reflect our mission in action. On April 12th, second-year students presented their final projects in our annual Entrepreneurial Program. This initiative challenges students to create original microenterprises, integrating business skills and cultural identity. Projects ranged from holistic soaps and traditional chocolate to Japanese-inspired mochi and amigurumi therapy dolls. These business ideas were developed throughout the year with guidance from Professor Fátima Hernández.

A panel of experts, including Chef Emmanuel Campoy, Ana Paula Medeles, and image consultant Lucy Pérez, evaluated the projects. The winners were Monica Moreno (VEMAX botanical soaps), Alejandra Elizabeth (KENCOOKIE, healthy cookies), and Azyadeth Padilla (AZYA RESIN ANDO, personalized resin art). The event was a moving display of talent, resilience, and creativity.

On May 30th, our students brought their knowledge and training to life with the Graduation Dinner at Hotel Real de Chapala. Entirely planned and executed by the graduating class, the evening served as their final professional assessment. Under Chef Campoy’s mentorship, the students designed the menu, prepared a multi-course meal, and served 37 guests with elegance and warmth. It was a true celebration of their transformation into young professionals.

Earlier that month, we received a meaningful visit from Isobel Peden, Treasurer of the John Edwards Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), who presented a generous donation in memory of Mary Lu Saavedra. This gift supports the equipment of Jaltepec’s new Mini Kitchen Laboratory, enhancing practical training opportunities. A commemorative plaque will be placed in the space, honoring the memory of Mary Lu and the continued support of the DAR.

This edition also marks the transition of two beloved members of our community: Linda Buckthorp and Carole Baker. For over 25 years, Linda has played a key role in fundraising efforts, helping secure full scholarships for up to 18 students annually. Her dedication has left a lasting legacy of opportunity. Carole Baker, who faithfully crafted our newsletters for many years, also steps back, leaving behind a legacy of storytelling and connection that has touched many hearts.

These recent months remind us of what makes Jaltepec so special: shared vision, deep commitment, and life-changing education. Each student who crosses our doors carries with her not only the skills of her profession but also the strength and dignity to transform her community.
