A university dean, a corrections officer, and a disgraced former athlete walk into a retirement home…and into the Bare Stage August production, Doris and Ivy in the Home by Norm Foster.

Doris and Ivy in the Home takes three unlikely companions on a journey through illness, relationships, perhaps even some romance, and the occasional snoop on another senior couple who like to, uh, get busy in the garden. Doris is a former corrections officer with a tough exterior, Ivy is a former skier who fled to Canada after a career-ending run, and Arthur used to be a dean, but he prefers to think of himself as a teacher. Arthur only has eyes for Ivy, while Ivy is afraid to fall in love again after three failed marriages. After much meddling and the occasional heart-to-heart, the three end up totally inseparable as they settle into their new lives.

The ability to change our lives over and over again, no matter what age we are, is part of the beauty of being human, and Doris and Ivy in the Home directly speaks to that humanity. The play delves into real issues while keeping the overall essence lively and fun.

Lake Chapala Community Orchestra

Lake Chapala Orchestra and Gustav Mahler

The Fourth Symphony

Conducted by Michael Reason

Soloist is Janeene Williams

2 Concerts on Saturday, August 17, 2024, 2 p.m. and 4:30 pm

Gustav Mahler is considered a giant amongst the world’s most revered composers, right up there with Mozart and Beethoven.

Gustav Mahler

His nine symphonies bridge the 19th and 20th centuries and most of them call for huge orchestral forces.

The 4th symphony, however, is considered his most approachable and lyrical work requiring a somewhat smaller orchestra. The Lake Chapala Orchestra is presenting this symphony on Saturday August 17 as part of its 2024 season.

“We have been able to acquire a marvelous arrangement of the symphony by Iain Farrington” says Michael Reason, the orchestra’s conductor, “and this version for 25 instruments, including a harp, loses none of its charm and is ideally suited for a small venue like the one we perform in.”

The final movement of this 55-minute work features a soprano soloist who sings about a child’s vision of heaven. Local soprano Janeene Williams will be the soloist and will also perform 2 of Mahler’s songs for voice and orchestra.

Janeene Williams

The concerts are a wonderful opportunity to experience the sound world of Mahler live in our community, with one of his most tuneful and creative works.

There are 2 performances at 2pm and 4.30pm on Saturday August 17. The venue is Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 250 San Jorge, Riberas. Tickets are $350 each and can be reserved by email at LCCOtickets@gmail.com . Early reservations are encouraged as every LCO concert sells out weeks in advance.
