THE BEST BROTHERS

Written by Daniel MacIvor, Directed by Darelene Sherwood, Starring Brian Kaulback and Patrick Trotter (Bare Stage debut).

Friday Nov. 22, Saturday Nov. 23, and Sunday, Nov. 24. All shows start at 4:00 pm. Tickets: $200 pesos. RESERVE NOW: barestagetheatre2018@gmail.com

This sharp, witty play explores themes of death, dysfunction and sibling rivalry through humor and heartfelt moments.

When brothers Kyle and Hamilton Best reunite after their mother’s unexpected death, they must confront her affairs, as well as their long-standing rivalries and unspoken resentments. The custody of their mother’s beloved dog, Enzo, becomes a pivotal point in their reconciliation.

MacIvor’s unique twist features the late mother appearing through the brothers’ perspectives, adding depth to their relationship. It’s an incredibly interesting device because MacIvor has each brother playing their late mother the way they saw her.

Our new location: Saint Andrew’s, 19 San Lucas, one block down from the Catholic Church on the lake side of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar. Look for directional signs. Handicapped parking is available out front and there’s a parking lot across the street. Our theatre is a scent-free location. Door and Bar opens at 3:00 pm. All bar proceeds go to Operation Feed. Seats are held till 3:50 pm.

Is it possible to learn to love? Certainly, important to ourselves, our community, and our world. Kemp will outline the five levels of love; the Spectrum of Love and its opposites; read mystical poetry from Rumi and Hafiz; discuss falling in love, heartbreak, and grief; yearning for an unknown better; and the practical application of love in the world.

Nov 10 “Dead Cat in the Rain and other Stories” by Michael Hogan

A sometimes humorous and sometimes poignant series of stories presented by well-known author illuminating some of the missteps and joys of living and working in Mexico from his latest book The Michael Hogan Reader. Michael resides in Guadalajara and is one of Mexico’s preeminent historians and always a popular presenter at Open Circle.

Nov 17 “Wings, Guns and Coming of Age” by JRW Case

The presentation’s theme resonates with the presenter’s personal history of growing up in the Midwest, the second son of a man who spent all of WWII and Korea in military service. My book is an adventure travelogue about a midlife escape across America on a touring bicycle during the summers of 2017-18. Case describes his talk as “in a style derivative of humorist/writer Mark Twain.”

Nov 24 “Capturing History: the life of Walter Thornton” by Nancy Navarro

Walter Thornton, the enigmatic “Merchant of Venus” was a man who lived a quiet life in Ajijic with his second wife Candelaria and their brood of six children. The Thornton sisters embarked on an emotional journey uncovering a tapestry of American history about their father, a pioneer who indelibly shaped the American beauty, modeling, and advertising industries from the late 1920s to 1955.

About this production of PETER AND THE WOLF:

Local actress Donna Burroughs is the versatile Narrator. Two Chapala-based puppeteers, Fatima Flores and Remyi Cavajal, along with students from the Instituto Internacional School have designed and built life-sized puppets representing the various characters in the work. Peter, the wolf, grandfather, the bird, the cat, and the duck will come alive as the story and music play out. The students will operate the puppets they have created.

Although originally conceived as a musical story for children, this is a piece that everyone can enjoy no matter one’s age.

Mexico’s folk-art traditions are disappearing at an alarming rate. Artisans need opportunities to sell their work and the Feria offers them a venue at absolutely no cost: no booth fee, no percentage of sales. We pay their transportation to and from the event and find them host families where they sleep and eat for the three days of the show. For some artisans, the sales they make at the Feria represent a major portion of their annual income.

The selection criteria for artisans is based on the merit and quality of their work, as well as their ability to continue to produce it. Traditional folk art reflects shared cultural aesthetics and traditions, however, for the purposes of the Feria, traditions are dynamic and traditional folk art can be both reactive to and innovative for the times. Indeed, we promote a wide range of Mexican folk art: world class, up-and-coming, innovative, and traditional.

Having 85 artisans at the Feria offers the public the opportunity to see the work of some of Mexico’s finest artists, allowing each artist a place to exhibit and sell their work. Indeed, the Feria promotes the folk art of Mexico, while educating the public that such art is in danger disappearing forever.

We are a non-profit organization and are run entirely by volunteers. For more information email:info@feriamaestros.com or Marianne Carlson, Founder of the Feria, has provided this information from the Feria website.
