A Heroine’s Journey
The current social system has favored a vertical perspective in which the achievement of goals is emphasized, and the importance of process is sacrificed. Only the result, the product, the visible and tangible material, is valued, not the internal source from which all creative endeavor springs. We must find new ways of redirecting our attention to the internal psychic world of the unconscious to regain balance between both worlds. A quote often attributed to Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung expresses how this balance might be understood: “The unconscious mind is like the sea, while the conscious mind is like an island emerging from it.”
Along with the imbalance between the inner and outer worlds within society, there exists another significant imbalance. Women have historically been rendered invisible in their creative capacity and spiritual expressions, as is seen in the hegemonic history of art and within traditional monotheist religions. The individual hero’s journey has been well documented in many classic mythological works, but the heroine’s journey is only beginning to be elaborated. Recovering the Sacred Feminine within our social systems is the most heroic and necessary journey for women to undertake. Such an exploration involves uncovering the generational conditioning that is rooted in our collective sense of identity – who we have been told we are – and then reclaiming our right to self-determination and self-definition – to our freedom.
The journey we women must undertake is about reclaiming our identity and recovering what we have been told we don’t possess. The essence of this journey involves reintegrating aspects of ourselves, such as the wisdom inherent in our female biology and its synchronistic cosmic alignment that have been buried so deeply as if they didn’t exist. Progressing in this inner journey will allow us to gradually re-value ourselves.
The internal descent is the only way to establish a bridge between the logical – rational world and the illogical-irrational one. This bridge is established to the extent that we consciously listen to the symbolic language of the creative process as well as to our dreams.
Why must we undertake the heroine’s journey? Because if we remain within the rationality of established cultural values, religious dogmas, and learned conditioning, nothing new will enter our consciousness. We will remain stuck within a closed circuit, programmed to follow others and not think for ourselves. This is a fundamental exploration for both genders to undertake.
Aspects of this journey involve the discovery of our ancestral heritage and our transpersonal nature. A redefinition of what we consider to be sacred will occur as will our knowledge about the nature of existence. Life will be seen not as something to endure, rather as our very teacher – even that we are life itself, without separation from the whole.
Investigating and reclaiming the sacred feminine has been my passion for over 40 years, I have conducted psycho/spiritually-based therapeutic workshops and given lectures with women in Mexico, the United States, Spain, France, Belgium and the Dominican Republic, involving ethnically and racially diverse women from all walks of life, religious and non-religious, young and old. This work has led me to recognize that women everywhere simply want to reclaim our divine nature. I have found that helping women balance and integrate the opposites within us while discovering deeper layers of consciousness always fosters a sense of gratitude and wholeness.
Recently, I was taken by surprise to receive this year’s grant from Proyecta 2025, given by the Secretariat de la Cultura Jalisco, which showcases a multimedia presentation of an artist’s lifelong work, in this case mine.
My project seeks to foster our connection with the sacred feminine that dwells in both men and women, and to highlight the importance of reclaiming the dialogue between the creative and spiritual dimensions of our lives through multiple artistic expressions.
My presentation for Proyecta 2025 involves a curated selection of my pictorial and written work displayed in various formats: paintings, drawings, poetry, essays, sculpture, dream recordings, rituals, and ceremonies that I have created throughout my decades-long journey inward. These works depict archetypal images of the collective psychic world and of the feminine form. I will also be conducting a series of workshops using the methodology I have developed over 40 years to reclaim our true nature.
The exhibition will be at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo in Chapala, October, date to be announced.
Workshops will be held at the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera (CCAR): Anahatha (“unblocking”) Model, August 4, 10:00 – 18:00
The Symbolism of the Unconscious, August 8, 10:00 – 18:00
A Gathering in Satsang (“A Meeting in Truth”) August 16, 14:30 – 16:30
