What began as a casual conversation over lunch among members of the Lakeside dance community has quickly transformed into one of the most anticipated events of the year. The new dance show, Movies and Icons – A Music Extravaganza, is set to take the stage at the Auditorio in Ajijic this March, bringing together the magic of movie music and the unforgettable sounds of iconic performers from a variety of genres.
The concept for the show emerged when the group, as usual, found themselves discussing their favorite films, songs, and dance routines. Little did they know that these casual musings would lead to the creation of a full-scale performance that would showcase everything from the electrifying tunes of Damn Yankees and Grease to the unforgettable soundtracks of James Bond films. The show also highlights the legendary talents of performers such as James Brown, Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars, Madonna, and many others.
A major highlight of the show is its diversity in dance styles. The Lakeside dance community is rich in talent, with performers and teachers trained in ballet, jazz, modern dance, tap, afro-fusion, tango, and flamenco. In addition to the Lakeside dancers, the show will feature special guests from Guadalajara: the renowned Hernandez Dancers, a group known for their exceptional performances in traditional Mexican dance, which will add an exciting cultural flair to the program. The production promises to feature a blend of these disciplines, offering a rich and dynamic experience for audiences of all ages. Whether it’s the energy of a Broadway number or the elegance of flamenco, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
“We’ve worked hard to create a show that not only showcases incredible music but also brings the artistry of our dancers to life,” said show producer and Lakeside dance instructor Val Jones. “It’s a true community effort, and we’re so excited to present Movies and Icons to the people of Ajijic.”
But this event is about more than just great entertainment – it’s also about giving back to the community. As part of their ongoing outreach, the Lakeside dance community proudly sponsors the Turning Point Project, which helps provide dance classes, shoes, and attire to children who might otherwise not have the opportunity to participate in the arts. A portion of the proceeds from Movies and Icons will go directly to supporting this important initiative, ensuring that more young people can experience the joy of dance.
In addition, the event will raise funds for the Festival del Lago music program. This unique music intensive is dedicated to helping university-level young musicians pursuing professional careers. Students from all over the world participate in this transformative program, which offers world-class training in classical music. The Festival del Lago generously sponsors all Mexican students, ensuring that promising young musicians from across the country have access to the program. The funds raised from the performances will go toward supporting the next generation of musicians, helping them continue their studies and work toward their professional dreams.
Movies and Icons – A Music Extravaganza will take place on March 14, 15, and 16 at 4:00 PM at the Auditorio in Ajijic. Tickets are priced at $400 pesos, and all profits from the performances will be donated to both the Turning Point Project and the Festival del Lago music program. Tickets can be reserved by emailing moviesandicons@gmail.com.
“This is more than just a performance – it’s a chance to support the next generation of dancers, musicians, and artists,” Jones added. “Who knows? You might just be sitting next to a future musical icon!”
Don’t miss out on this exciting opportunity to enjoy world-class dance, music, and community spirit while helping to make a difference.
