The Challenge of Artificial Intelligence, a Spiritual-Scientific Response

Observe the word “spiritual” in the title. In our present materialistic world created more and more since the advent of science in the 17^th century, we hear only of “spirit” while in churches. However, Rudolf Steiner, Ph.D. (1861-1925) stressed the importance of recognizing the reality of a spiritual world, containing both evil and beneficial beings. (See his books, Knowledge of Higher Worlds and its Attainment, and The Philosophy of Freedom.) He was the founder of the world-wide Anthroposophical Society, Waldorf (Steiner) Schools, biodynamic farming, health services, and many other initiatives.

Steiner’s influence is worldwide and when he spoke and wrote about the invisible world with its many Beings and influences, it is easy to understand, in today’s rush toward AI, AGI and ASI that we are being pushed toward danger. In addition to the Christ Being and his Angels, Steiner described many Beings working toward a completely materialistic universe headed by a Being known as “Ahriman” who is helping “Sorath, the Sun Demon” (of Biblical fame) as the leader of Evil, in a battle to destroy humanity. Ahriman is due to incarnate at the turn of the 20^th Century.

The good Spiritual Beings, headed by the Christ and the Archangel Michael (among others) are asking for assistance from humanity, through our ability to love – and there can be no real love without freedom – CHI (Collective Human Freedom).   

In Rudolf Steiner’s lecture on December 25, 1919, in Stuttgart, Germany, entitled “The Michael Path to Christ: A Christmas Lecture,” he began by saying that, “Only by the power of Christ will it be possible to penetrate declining civilization with that impulse which can give it a new uplift.”  He continued by saying, “I have frequently spoken to you of that important event which came to pass in the last third of the nineteenth century – the event through which a special relationship was established between the Archangel Michael and the destiny of mankind. I have reminded you that since November 1879, Michael has become the Regent of the World – for all those who seek to bring the beneficial forces necessary for our healthy progress. For now, Michael is the Countenance of Christ Jesus. Today, in the Michael period, an all-important matter is that human individuals strive to understand what Steiner termed the “Mystery of Golgotha” (the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus, the Divine Leader of the whole human race.)

And then Steiner added: “The time is approaching for the incarnation of “Ahriman.” Just as truly as Lucifer and Christ have walked the earth, so will Ahriman incarnate in human form, bringing with him an extraordinary increase of power to earthly HUMAN understanding. Ahriman will have tasks and we humans must make correct choices to adjust to that which Ahriman brings. He is already sending information into earth from the Worlds beyond in order that he may control the Economic life upon earth, without being noticed. This must not be. We must thoroughly learn to know his particular qualities and be able to oppose him with full consciousness.

It is most important for us at this time, according to Rudolf Steiner, to place Christ in the center between Ahriman and Lucifer. The Christ power must permeate us, and we must always seek the balance between the mystic enthusiasm that tends to lift us above ourselves, and the materialistic understanding which, by its heaviness, drags us down to Earth. In the effort to gain this balance, we find the Christ. When we strive to gain this balance, then alone can we find the Christ.
