How sweet, how difficult their birth
 
brought home, adored, unbundled,
 
shrink-wrapped, received with joy,
 
kissed and caressed and fondled –
 
These lost abandoned children,
 
shadows of former selves
 
now left without a second glance
 
alone, unread on loveless shelves.
